Constructing Parallel Lines

  1. Start with a line and a point not on the line.
  1. Draw a line from the point to through the line. Any line will do.
  1. Draw an arc centered on the point where the line from step 2 crosses the original line.
  1. Draw an arc of the same radius centered on the original point.
  1. With the protractor measure the distance from the original line to the point where the arc from step 2 and the line from step 3 cross. Draw an arc of that size centered on the point where the arc from step 4 crosses the line from step 2.
  1. Draw a line connecting the original point through the point where the arc from step 5 crosses the arc from step 4. This line is parallel to the original line.
